Ep 307: Turning Challenges into Opportunities Through Technology with Rick Elmore

Rick Elmore talks about his journey of building a handwriting robot. He recounts the process of developing a writing robot, starting with buying a pen plotter from China, and then attempting to use an Auto Pen for two years before realizing that building their own writing robot was the only way forward.

He walks us through the 14 Phase 0 processes he went through with different engineering companies in order to come up with confidence-building solutions, citing an example of how sending out 500 handwritten notes resulted in significant results for his business. Rick's background in sales and athletics helped him ask better questions and seek feedback until he was comfortable pulling the trigger.

Tune in now for this inspiring story about how Rick had the confidence that the robot would work and how he believed in his company since Day 1. This episode provides valuable insights into the journey of building a handwriting robot and the importance of believing in your concept, seeking feedback, and making calculated decisions.

Episode Highlights

01:35 - A Phase 0 is basically you tell them your idea. You show them what you're trying to do. They dig into it, research it, build you a plan, and give you a quote. I did that 14 times and we spent over $800,000 on this. I knew this project was going to be big. We have no loans, no debt, no investors. This is all customer-funded, so it's like we could not afford to miss. So, I went through that process 14 times. Again, I have a sales and athletic background. I was afraid to make the wrong decision.
